How does Olympus define ìweatherproof?î Olympusí weatherproof cameras feature protection from inclement weather equivalent to the IEC Standard publication 529 IPX4. The camera will not be damaged by water splashed from any direction. The camera can be used outdoors in adverse weather conditions. It will resist water, dust and snow. Please note that Olympus cameras described as weatherproof are not waterproof and should not be immersed in water. Olympus will not assume responsibility for any damage caused by water getting inside the camera as a result of misuse. Also, the rechargeable battery and other camera accessories are not weatherproof. Care should be taken when using accessories. The Stylus 740 features Bright Capture technology. What is it, and how does it work? Bright Capture technology helps you take better pictures in low-light conditions. It lightens the preview in the LCD monitor by condensing light information from groups of neighboring CCD pixels into each pixel of the LCD. This allows you to see on-screen an image that will more closely resemble the final print. The display is 4.5 times brighter than those of other digital cameras, making it easier to compose shots in dark or subdued light. Certain shooting and scene modes also use Bright Capture technology to improve your digital photos. In these modes, light information from groups of neighboring CCD pixels is packed into each pixel of the captured digital image file. This results in clearer, brighter images. With Bright Capture active, even action photos can be captured in low levels of ambient light, without using a flash. Note that the Stylus 740 restricts the maximum resolution of images captured when certain Bright Capture-enabled shooting modes are selected. Why does the Stylus 740 limit the size (resolution) of images shot in certain Bright Capture-enabled shooting modes? Bright Capture restricts the maximum resolution of images captured in the Scene mode's Available Light and Candle scenes as well as those shot in the high-speed Sequential Shooting mode. This is a noise-reduction strategy. The noise that can sometimes be seen on images captured in low light is often related to the high number of pixels on the image sensor. Pixels generate heat as they collect light information, and this heat can cause unwanted electronic charges, or ìnoise,î to creep into the digital image file. The more pixels there are on the image sensor, the more heat and the more potential for noise. Bright Capture condenses the light information into a smaller area of the image. As a result, the overall number of pixels, or resolution, needed to capture the image in low light is reduced. The resulting image with Bright Capture will be bright, clear, and less susceptible to the effects of noise. Does Bright Capture technology work always, automatically? Bright Capture is always automatically working to ensure that images are viewable on the LCD. In addition, certain shooting and scene modes automatically use Bright Capture when recording images. Which shooting modes automatically use Bright Capture technology? Bright Capture technology is always used when shooting in Digital Image Stabilization mode, in Movie mode, and in high-speed Sequential Shooting mode. Also, it is automatically activated when using ISO 800 or higher. Which scene modes automatically use Bright Capture technology? Bright Capture technology is always used when the following scenes are selected: Available Light, Candle, Indoors, and Shoot & Select1. The Stylus 740 has a Digital Image Stabilization shooting mode. What is it, and how does it work? The Digital Image Stabilization shooting mode is designed to reduce the blurring effect that occurs when either the camera or the subject is in motion during image capture. Images taken in low light are particularly susceptible to blurring because the shutter is held open longer in order to expose the CCD to enough light to capture the picture. When the camera is in Digital Image Stabilization shooting mode, the light sensitivity of the CCD is boosted so that the shutter speed can stay fast enough to freeze motion. The adjustment is made automatically when the level of ambient light would be insufficient to maintain a shutter speed of 1/125 at ISO 64. How does Digital Image Stabilization mode compare to Optical Image Stabilization available in other, more expensive cameras? Digital Image Stabilization mode is more effective than Optical Image Stabilization in three key respects: Capturing subjects in motion: Digital Image Stabilizationís high ISO sensitivity combined with a fast shutter speed minimizes blur caused by camera movement (shaky hands) and subject movement. Optical Image Stabilization is incapable of compensating for a moving subject. Shooting in low light: Digital Image Stabilizationís high ISO sensitivity enables the camera to take brighter images in dim light; the same image taken with Optical Image Stabilization alone will be darker. Consuming less power: Digital Image Stabilization does not require any additional power; Optical Image Stabilization drains batteries more quickly. The Stylus 740 offers a Silent Mode. What is it, and how does it work? In Silent Mode, the camera emits no audible cues. It will not beep when capturing an image or when making menu selections, and it will not ring an alarm when the alarm clock is set and the appointed time arrives. Instead, the camera will issue a visual cue when the alarm activates while the camera is in Silent Mode. The LCD monitor will turn on and display the time. To activate Silent Mode, first place the camera into any shooting mode other than [GUIDE], and then press the [MENU] button. Press the Right Arrow and then the Down Arrow to select [Silent Mode]. Press the [OK/FUNC] button to access the Silent mode menu. Use the Up or Down arrow button to choose [ON], and then press [OK/FUNC] again to activate Silent Mode. To disable Silent Mode, repeat the above procedure but at the Silent Mode menu choose [OFF] instead of [ON]. What are the benefits of the TruePic TURBO™ image processor? TruePic TURBO is Olympusí new image-processing engine, designed to be approximately 30% faster than the TruePic engine. TruePic TURBO provides rapid start-up and shutter response, meaning there is less lag time between shots. The processor enables faster image playback on the LCD and improved battery life. It also has an advanced color-processing technology and noise filter for better overall image quality. For more information on the TruePic TURBO processor, click here. The Stylus 740 is PictBridge™-enabled. What is PictBridge? PictBridge is a specification that allows for direct printing of photos between various brands of digital still cameras and printers without the use of a computer. The Stylus 740 supports PRINT Image Matching™ (PIM3). What is PRINT Image Matching? PRINT Image Matching (PIM3) technology ensures that PIM3-enabled digital cameras and printers work together to produce the best possible prints. As the digital camera records an image, it embeds print-specific information into the header of the image file. The parameters incorporated into the image file include gamma level, sharpness, brightness, saturation, shadow, highlight, and color balance. PIM3-enabled printers are able to instantly identify this information and use it to produce superior color, quality and detail in every print. What are the dimensions of the Stylus 740? The Stylus 740 is 3.8î W x 2.1î H x 0.96î D (96mm x 54mm x 24.3mm) ñ perfect for pocket or purse. What recording modes does the Stylus 740 support? The Stylus 740 records still images in JPEG format in accordance with Design Rule for Camera File System (DCF) specifications, supporting the following standards: Exif 2.21, PRINT Image Matching III (PIM3), and PictBridge. It records movies with audio in QuickTime motion JPEG format. Each mode has multiple resolution options depending upon which image quality mode is selected. What are image quality modes, and which are available in the Stylus 740? Image quality modes dictate the size (pixel resolution) and compression ratio of the digital files created by the camera when it records pictures and movies. As resolution and image quality increase, so does the file size, which means fewer files can be stored. Image file quality is indicated as SHQ (Super High Quality), HQ (High Quality), SQ1 (Standard Quality) and SQ2 (Standard Quality with greater compression). Movie file quality is indicated as SHQ, HQ and SQ. The Stylus 740 supports the following resolutions: Movies: 640 x 480 (SHQ); 320 x 240 (HQ); and 160 x 120 (SQ). Use the Up or Down arrow to select [YES]. Press the [OK/FUNC] button to start the file transfer. When it completes, press the [OK] button again to exit the menus. The backup procedure may take some time. It is recommended that you fully charge your battery before performing a backup. Note: It is not possible to copy images from a memory card to the internal memory. How do I use the Digital Image Stabilization shooting mode? Select Digital Image Stabilization mode by turning the mode dial to the icon of a hand. Digital Image Stabilization effects end when you select another shooting or scene mode. Which image quality mode should I use when I shoot my images? The best way to determine which image quality mode is best for any shot is to decide ñ before you shoot ñ how you will use the captured image. The default HQ mode is ideal if you plan to print your images in the standard 4î x 6î snapshot size. Itís great for scrapbooking or for printing from the kiosks often found at drugstores, camera stores or retailers with on-site photo-processing labs. If you are planning to e-mail your images or post them to a web site, use an image quality mode with a lower resolution, such as SQ1. The images will still look great when viewed on a computer, and their smaller file sizes will allow you to store more images on your memory card. Generally speaking, you should only use the highest-quality option if you are planning to print the images larger than 4î x 6î or if you intend to use them for professional or commercial purposes. How can I review my pictures in the camera? By default, the Stylus 740 will briefly display the last image taken after the shutter button is released. If you would like a longer look, turn the mode dial so that the playback mode icon (green arrow) is aligned with the LED light to the left of the dial. You will then have the following options: Use the Single-Frame playback mode to scroll through all the images in your internal memory or on your memory card, one at a time. Use the arrow pad to navigate through your files. Use the Index playback mode to view thumbnails of several images at once. Use the Slideshow feature to view all of your still images in succession. Use the Calendar display to jump to images and movies taken on a particular date. Use the Album display to organize images and movies by any criteria you choose. Use the Histogram display to view the balance of lightness and darkness in an image. Use the arrow pad to select a transition effect. Press [OK/FUNC] to activate the selection. Press [OK/FUNC] a second time. The slideshow will start immediately and loop indefinitely. Press [OK/FUNC] again to end the show. What is the purpose of the Calendar playback mode? By default, the Stylus 740 will display the last file recorded when the Playback button is pressed. If you use high-capacity xD-Picture Cardô media, you are likely over time to amass a large quantity of files that were shot on a wide range of dates. This can, over time, make it inconvenient to select and display image or movie files that are not among the earliest or the most recent files recorded to the card. The Calendar playback mode lets you jump directly to images and movies captured on a particular shooting date. You simply use the arrow pad to navigate within a calendar interface and select the desired date. Press the [OK] button to display the first image recorded on that date. All images are available to view in Calendar mode ñ not just the ones that were captured on the selected date. Think of Calendar mode as a way to ìfast-forwardî to the images you wish to display rather than as a filter that restricts what you can display. How do I access the Calendar function? To access the Calendar from the menu, first turn the mode dial to the Playback icon (green arrow). Next, press the [MENU] button. Press the Left arrow on the arrow pad to select [CALENDAR], and then press the [OK/FUNC] button. Alternatively, press the ìWî on the Zoom button toward the Index icon (green grid) five times. The Calendar appears following the last (25-up) Index mode layout. The [CALENDAR] function requires an xD-Picture Card‰ flash memory card, sold separately. Note: Calendar mode relies upon the cameraís date setting in order to organize images. Set the date and time before capturing any images. If in the Calendar display you do not see images that you shot on a particular date, check the cameraís date setting to find out if the camera recorded the image with an offset shooting date. Under what circumstances should I manually set the ISO sensitivity? By default, the Stylus 740 automatically adjusts the ISO sensitivity of the CCD in order to capture clear, sharp pictures in all lighting conditions. It sets a low value when natural light is plentiful, such as when shooting outdoors on a sunny day, and it sets the value higher as light becomes less available. The higher the ISO value, the better the camera will be able to shoot with a fast shutter speed and to shoot in low-light conditions. However, high ISO sensitivity introduces noise into the resulting image, which in extreme cases can give the shot a grainy appearance. In the Full Auto shooting mode, the camera shoots with a conservative ISO range in order to minimize the appearance of noise in the shot. When shooting at very high ISO values (800 and higher), you must strike a balance between introducing some noise into the shot and capturing a moment or a subject that you would otherwise miss. How do I change ISO sensitivity in the Stylus 740? The easiest way to change the ISO sensitivity is to use the Function menu. With the mode dial set to any shooting mode except [GUIDE], press the [OK/FUNC] button to launch the Function menu. Use the Up and Down arrows on the arrow pad to select the WB item, and then use the Left and Right arrows to select the desired ISO sensitivity value. Note that some scene modes automatically adjust the ISO to compensate for existing lighting. Under what circumstances should I manually set the White Balance? By default, the Stylus 740 automatically adjusts the white balance setting to achieve the most natural color, regardless of the light source. However, certain shooting conditions may trick a digital camera into selecting a setting that does not provide the best color possible. These conditions, which will impact any manufacturerís digital cameras, are: How do I adjust the White Balance in the Stylus 740? The easiest way to change the White Balance is to use the Function menu. With the mode dial set to any shooting mode except [GUIDE], press the [OK/FUNCTION] button to launch the Function menu. Use the Up and Down arrow keys on the arrow pad to select the WB function, and then use the Left and Right arrow keys to select the appropriate light source. White Balance can also be set from the main Camera Menu. What differentiates the three Fluorescent Lamp white balance options? Fluorescent Lamp 1 is ideal for shooting under daylight fluorescent lighting. This type of lighting is usually found in homes. Fluorescent Lamp 2 is suitable for shooting under a neutral white fluorescent lamp. This type of lamp is commonly found in desk lamps. Fluorescent Lamp 3 is best when shooting under a white fluorescent lamp. This type of lamp is commonly found in overhead lighting in offices. Note: The Stylus 740 automatically sets the White Balance in Full Auto mode and in the scene modes. What is the difference between the Under Water Wide1 scene and the Under Water Wide2 scene? In the former, the photographer retains control of the optical zoom. In the latter, the zoom is fixed at its widest setting (6.4mm). The focus distance is fixed at approximately 5.0 meters to allow for quicker shutter release. What is the difference between the Shoot & Select1 scene and the Shoot & Select2 scene? In Shoot & Select1, the camera fixes the focus after the first frame. In Shoot & Select2, the camera focuses before shooting each frame. How do I adjust the exposure value (EV) in the Stylus 740? With the mode dial set to any shooting mode except [GUIDE], press the Up arrow on the arrow pad to access the Exposure Compensation feature. Then use the Left and Right arrows to make the image brighter (Right arrow) or darker (Left arrow). The value can be adjusted +/- 2 EV in 1/3 EV increments. Press the [OK] button to apply the setting. Note: Exposure compensation may not produce the desired brightness on the subject if the area in the frame surrounding the subject is extremely bright or extremely dark. How can I change the brightness setting of the LCD monitor? You can adjust the brightness of the LCD monitor from the [SETUP] menu. With the mode dial set to any mode except [GUIDE], press the [MENU] button. Press the Right arrow on the arrow pad to select [SETUP], and then press the [OK] button to access the Setup menu. On the next screen, use the Up or Down arrow to navigate to the icon of the LCD monitor. Press the Right arrow to access the settings. Use the arrow pad to make the display lighter (Up arrow) or darker (Down arrow). The brightness of the display will change to demonstrate the effect the selection will have. Select the desired brightness setting, and then press [OK] to activate it. Press the [MENU] button twice to exit the menu. Will my custom settings be retained after I turn off the power? The [RESET] feature gives you the flexibility to decide. When [RESET] is set to [OFF], your custom settings will be retained when the power is turned off. When [RESET] is set to [ON], the factory default settings will be restored each time the power is turned off. To restore the factory default settings, turn the mode dial to any shooting mode except [GUIDE], and then press the [MENU] button. Press the Left arrow button to select the [RESET] icon. Press the [OK] button to access the [RESET] menu. Next, press the Up or Down arrow button to select [YES]. Press the [OK] button to reset the camera defaults. The features affected by [RESET] and their default values are: AF mode (SPOT), Digital Zoom (OFF), Drive (Single), Exposure Value (0.0), Flash mode (AUTO), Image Quality (HQ), ISO (AUTO), Macro (OFF), Metering mode (ESP), Record sound with still images (OFF), Self-timer (OFF), and White Balance (AUTO). Note: In the absence of battery power, custom settings will be retained for about three days. After that, the original factory default settings will be restored. When [DUALTIME] is set to [ON], images and movies are recorded with the date and time set in [DUALTIME]. Also, the [ALARM CLOCK] will sound according to the [DUALTIME] date and time settings, not those of the camera default date and time. How do I use the Alarm Clock feature on the Stylus 740? The alarm clock feature causes the camera to play an audio cue at a predetermined time or interval. To use the alarm clock, you must first set the cameraís date and time. Note that if [DUALTIME] is set to [ON], the alarm will sound according to the [DUALTIME] date and time settings, not those of the camera default date and time. With the mode dial set to any mode except [GUIDE], press the [MENU] button. Next, press the Right arrow on the arrow pad to select [SETUP], and then press the [OK/FUNC] button to access the Setup menu. Use the Up or Down arrow to navigate to [ALARM CLOCK]. Press the Right arrow to advance to the next screen. Use the Up or Down arrow to select the frequency with which the alarm should activate. [ONE TIME] means the alarm will ring at the appointed time and then turn [ALARM CLOCK] to [OFF]; [DAILY] means the alarm will ring each day at the appointed time. Whichever choice you select, you must press the Right arrow to continue. Next, you will have three options: Set the time: Use the arrows to select [TIME], and then press the Right arrow. Use the Up or Down arrow to change the Hour. (The Stylus 740 uses a 24-hour clock.) Press the Right arrow to move to the Minutes value. Use the Up or Down arrow to change the Minutes. If you press [OK/FUNC] only once, the [SNOOZE] function will not be set. You may then press the Right arrow to re-enter the alarm options menu and make another selection, or simply press [MENU] twice to exit the menus. Choose the alarm sound and volume: Use the Up or Down arrow to select [ALARM SOUND], and then press the Right arrow. Use the Up or Down arrow to choose from three available alarm sounds. Select the desired alarm sound and then press the Right arrow to advance to the volume settings. Use the Up or Down arrows to select the volume level (low, mid or high). Press the [OK/FUNC] button twice ñ first to enter your choice of setting and a second time to activate it. If you press [OK/FUNC] only once, neither the alarm sound nor the volume level will be changed. You may then press the Up or Down arrow to set other alarm options, press [OK/FUNC] to return to the [SETUP] menu, or simply press [MENU] three times to exit the menus. After making all of your selections, turn off the camera. The alarm will only activate when the camera is off. To shut off the alarm, press any button except the power button. Pressing the power button will turn the camera on, disabling the [SNOOZE] function even if [SNOOZE] is set to [ON.] How do I verify that my alarm clock settings have been accepted? With the camera turned off, press the [DISP./?] button and hold it for three seconds. The camera will display both the current camera time (top right corner of the LCD screen) and the set alarm time (bottom right corner of the LCD screen, alongside an icon of a red bell). Does the Alarm Clock feature work when the Stylus 740 is in Silent Mode? Yes. However, the alarm will not emit an audible signal. Instead, the LCD monitor will light up at the designated time and display the clock. How do I change the display language of the menus? With the mode dial set to any mode except [GUIDE], press the [MENU] button. Next, press the Right arrow on the arrow pad to select [SETUP], and then press the [OK/FUNC] button to access the Setup menu. Use the Up or Down arrow to navigate to the icon of the head and word balloon. Press the Right arrow to advance to the language menu. Use the Up or Down arrow to choose a new language, and then press the [OK/FUNC] button to enable the new language. Press the [MENU] button twice to exit [SETUP]. Is there a way to add additional display languages to my camera? The Stylus 740 has built-in support for four languages: English, Spanish, French and Portuguese. A fifth language of your choice can be added via a firmware download. There is no charge associated with this download. To add a language, you must first install onto a computer the Olympus Master software that was packaged with your camera. After installation, use the included USB cable to connect the camera to the computer. Launch Olympus Master and click on the ìBrowse Imagesî icon. Next, select ìUpdate Cameraî from the ìOnline Servicesî menu. (An Internet connection is required for this function.) The following warning will appear during the installation of the additional language: ìOnce the firmware is updated, it cannot be returned to the previous menu.î The original languages will remain in the camera, and the new one will be appended to the bottom of the menu. Once added, the new language can be enabled just as you would choose any other supported language. If you later wish to add another language, you may exchange the fifth language for any one of the other languages available via the firmware download by repeating this process. How can I disable audio recording when shooting movies? Sound is always recorded when the Stylus 740 is in Movie mode. However, you can disable the audio portion of a movie file when you review it in Playback mode. There are two ways to do this: Can the Stylus 740 record audio along with my still images? The Stylus 740 can record brief audio notes along with your still images. The audio becomes an embedded part of the image file and cannot be separated from the file once it has been recorded. Audio cues can be added during image capture, or they can be spliced into a file after capture. How do I record audio while shooting still images? To record sound while shooting still images, set the mode dial to the Camera or Hand icon or to [SCN]. Next, press the [MENU] button. [CAMERA MENU] will be selected by default; press the [OK/FUNC] button to access the Camera menu. Use the Up or Down arrows on the pad to navigate to the microphone icon, and then press the Right arrow to advance to the next screen. Use the Up or Down arrow to select [ON], and then press [OK/FUNC] again. Press the [MENU] button twice to exit the menus. Audio recording will then be enabled. A microphone icon will appear on the LCD to remind you that audio capture is active. The audio capture will remain in effect until it is turned off or, in the case of Digital Image Stabilization mode and the scene modes, until the mode dial is turned to another mode. Returning the mode dial to Digital Image Stabilization mode or the scene modes will cause the camera to load the default settings for those modes, and the default for each is for audio recording to be disabled. When the audio recording function is enabled, the camera will capture four seconds of sound beginning about .5 seconds after the shutter button is released. For best reception, point the microphone toward the sound source. How do I add audio to previously captured images? To add sound to a previously captured image, first turn the mode dial to the Playback icon (green arrow). Use the arrow pad to select the image to which you wish to add audio, and then press the [MENU] button. [CAMERA MENU] will be selected by default; press the [OK/FUNC] button to access the Camera menu. Use the Up or Down arrows on the pad to navigate to the microphone icon, and then press the Right arrow to advance to the next screen. Use the Up or Down arrow to select [YES]. The camera will then record four seconds of sound and embed the audio information into the selected file. An icon of a green musical note will accompany images with embedded audio when the camera is in playback mode and the files are displayed on the LCD. Sound may be recorded and re-recorded to any still image; however, it is not possible to edit the audio associated with a movie file. How do I delete the sound from a still image with embedded audio? The sound in an audio-enabled still image is embedded in the digital file and cannot be separated from the image data. However, it is possible to create a copy of a sound-enabled file without including the audio track, effectively ìdeletingî the audio while retaining the image information from the original file. To accomplish this, turn the mode dial to the Playback icon (green arrow) and then use the arrow pad to select the image whose audio information you wish to delete. Next, press the [MENU] button. Press the Up arrow to select [EDIT], and then press the [OK/FUNC] button to access the Edit menu. Use the Up or Down arrow to navigate to and select either [BRIGHTNESS] or [SATURATION]. Press the Right arrow to advance to the next screen. You will see a selection panel, and the image you selected for editing will be visible in the frame. Press [OK/FUNC] to select the picture and continue to the adjustment panel. Without making any changes, press [OK/FUNC] again. A copy of the selected image will be saved, excluding any audio information. You will then be returned to Playback mode, from which you can select and erase the original sound-enabled file. How do I erase an image that I do not wish to keep? The easiest way to delete a single image is to use the erase button. This button features an icon of a trashcan in red ink. It is below and to the right of the arrow pad. To use this feature, first turn the mode dial to the Playback icon (green arrow). Use the Left and Right arrows on the arrow pad to navigate to and select the image you wish to delete. Press the erase button. Use the Up or Down arrow on the arrow pad to choose [YES], and then press the [OK/FUNC] button. The file will be erased. Erased files cannot be retrieved, so use this feature carefully. How do I erase all my images at once? The Stylus 740 includes an [ALL ERASE] function to quickly and conveniently remove all files saved to the internal memory or to a media card. To use this feature, first turn the mode dial to the Playback icon (green arrow) and then press the [MENU] button. Next, press the Down arrow on the arrow pad to select [ERASE], and then press the [OK/FUNC] button to access the Erase menu. Use the Up or Down arrow to select [ALL ERASE], and then press [OK/FUNC] again to completely remove all unprotected images. What can I do to prevent accidental file deletion? The Protect feature prevents selected files from being deleted even when an [ERASE] or [ALL ERASE] function is performed. However, protected files will be deleted if they reside on a memory card when a [FORMAT] function is performed on that card. To protect a file, first turn the mode dial to the Playback icon (green arrow). Use the Left and Right arrows on the arrow pad to navigate to and select a file that you wish to protect. Next, press the [MENU] button. [PLAYBACK MENU] is selected by default. Press the [OK/FUNC] button to access the Playback menu. The Protect tool (key icon) is selected by default. Press [OK/FUNC] to advance to the next screen. Use the Up or Down arrow to select [ON]. Press [OK/FUNC] again to protect the selected image. A green key icon appears atop a protected image whenever it is displayed in the LCD monitor. The key is shown even when the camera is set to Index playback mode. Are any firmware updates available for this model? Use the [Update Camera] function in the OLYMPUS Master software packaged with your camera to find out whether firmware updates are available for your digital camera. An Internet connection is required to perform the operation. After installing the software onto a computer, connect your camera to the computer using the USB cable packaged with the camera. Next, launch OLYMPUS Master and click on the [Update Camera] icon in the lower right of the main window. (You can also access this tool from the Browse Images window by selecting [Update Camera] from the [Online Services] menu. On the resulting dialog, under Select Device, you will see your camera. Highlight it, and press the [Check for latest version] button. If a firmware update is available for your model, it will then be listed in the Select Firmware section of the dialog. Click here for complete instructions on how to update the cameraís firmware. Note: If multiple firmware updates are available for your model, it may not always be possible to update directly from the current firmware version in your camera to the latest available version. In such cases, updates must be applied in stages. For this reason, it is recommended that, after updating the camera firmware, you immediately check again for additional updates. Simply repeat the update procedure to apply subsequent updates. I purchased a Stylus 740, but the box contained only a printed manual. How can I get an electronic copy? The Stylus 740 is packaged with a comprehensive, hard-copy Instruction Manual. A PDF version of the manual is also available for download from the product support page for the Stylus 740 on the Olympus America web site. Adobe Reader software is required to view the PDF file. I purchased the Stylus 740, and the box was missing a component. How do I get a replacement? Please visit the Olympus Customer Service web site to report the missing component. Click here, fill out the requested fields, and then click Send to submit your request for assistance form. Please allow up to 48 hours for our Customer Service Representatives to respond via e-mail to your question. The Stylus 740 does not have a memory card packaged in the box. Why not? The Stylus 740 has 17 MB of built-in flash memory and does not need a memory card to function. It will accept xD-Picture Cardô flash memory media in the following capacities: 16MB, 32MB, 64MB, 128MB, 256MB, 512MB, 1GB and 2GB. The Stylus 740 does not recognize my flash memory card. What can I do? First, refer to the xD-Picture Cardô Compatibility Chart to verify that the card is supported in your model. If the card is not supported, return it to the store where you purchased it. The Stylus 740 may not recognize non-Olympus brand media or a card that has been formatted on another device, such as a card reader or personal computer. As a general rule, xD-Picture Card media should only be formatted in the camera. Card readers should only be used to copy files from the memory card to an external device. You may be able to use the card if you format it in the camera. Warning: Formatting a memory card will delete all content on the card. When I put my xD-Picture Card™ flash memory card into the camera and turn it on, I get a ìCard Errorî message. What can I do? This message occurs when the camera is unable to recognize the memory card or when an attempt to format a card fails. If you see this message after inserting a brand new card, refer to the xD-Picture Card Compatibility Chart to verify that the card is supported in your model. If the card is not supported, return it to the store where you purchased it. If the card is supported, it may need to be cleaned. Wipe the gold contacts of the card with alcohol using a soft cloth or tissue. When the contacts are dry, insert the card and turn the camera on. If the Card Error message still appears, remove the card and insert a different (supported) card into the camera. If the camera reads the second card, then the camera is working properly and the problem lies with the original card. You may be able to use the card if you format it in the camera. Warning: Formatting a memory card will delete all content on the card. If you receive this error message after a failed attempt to format the memory card, the card may be defective. For assistance, contact Olympusí Customer Service and Repair Center using any of the following methods: Power Save mode ñ When the Stylus 740 is set to a shooting mode (lens is extended) and [POWER SAVE] is set to [ON], the camera will automatically turn off the LCD monitor after 10 seconds of inactivity. Next, press the Right arrow on the arrow pad to select [SETUP], and then press the [OK/FUNC] button to access the Setup menu. Use the Up or Down arrow to select [POWER SAVE], and then press the Right arrow to advance to the next screen. Use the Up or Down arrow to select [OFF]. Press [OK/FUNC] again to activate the setting. Press [MENU] twice to exit the menus. The default setting of [POWER SAVE] is [OFF]. Sleep mode ñ When the Stylus 740 is set to a shooting mode (lens is extended), the camera will automatically turn off the LCD monitor after three minutes of inactivity. Press the zoom button or shutter button to re-activate the camera. If the camera is not used for 15 minutes after entering Sleep Mode, it automatically retracts the lens and shuts off. To resume taking pictures, press the Power button. Sleep mode cannot be manually configured or disabled. What should I do if I cannot focus on a particular subject? Try the FOCUS LOCK feature. This feature allows you to focus on a subject roughly the same distance away from you as the intended subject and then re-compose your picture without losing that focus. First, choose a test subject that is as close to the camera as your intended subject. Compose the shot in the LCD monitor. Press the shutter button halfway down; the camera will automatically focus on the test subject. The focus will be locked at the appropriate distance until you release the shutter button or take the picture. Re-compose your shot using the intended target, and then press the shutter button all the way down. TIP: If you see a blinking green light on the monitor when composing your shot, the focus and exposure are not adjusted properly. Try locking the focus again. A small, bright dot appears in the same spot on all my downloaded images. What can I do? This is caused by the failure of one or more pixels on the CCD. Run the Pixel Mapping feature to check and adjust the CCD sensor and image-processing functions. Wait about one minute after taking or viewing pictures to allow the Pixel Mapping function to perform properly. If the camera is turned off during pixel mapping, you must start over. To do so, turn the mode dial to any shooting mode except [GUIDE] and then press the [MENU] button. Next, press the Right arrow on the arrow pad to select [SETUP], and then press the [OK/FUNC] button to access the Setup menu. Use the Up or Down arrow to navigate to [PIXEL MAPPING]. Press the Right arrow to select [START]. Press [OK/FUNC] to begin pixel mapping. Once the process has completed, the bright dot should no longer appear in images you subsequently capture and download. To learn more about how Pixel Mapping works, click here. Why do I get blurry images? Blurry images are often the result of movement during image capture. Either the camera was not held still ñ a phenomenon called ìcamera shakeî ñ or the subject was moving and the camera did not fire with a fast enough shutter speed to freeze the action. Click here for additional suggestions on how to prevent blurry pictures. Why are my images blurry when I shoot in ìNight Sceneî mode? Night Scene mode is designed to help you capture better exposures outdoors in low-light conditions. The camera holds the shutter open longer than it would in other situations, allowing more light to reach the CCD. Because the shutter is open longer, it is very important to keep both the camera and the subject still. Camera motion during image capture will result in blurry pictures. Click here for more information on Night Scene mode. In portraits taken indoors or in low light, my subjectís eyes are unnaturally red. How can I prevent this from happening? The effect known as ìred-eyeî occurs when the light emitted from the camera flash bounces off the back of the subjectís retina. The red color is picked up from the blood vessels behind the eyes and displayed in the resulting image. To avoid or minimize red-eye when shooting in low light with the flash, use Red-Eye Reduction mode. In this mode, the flash fires a few bursts before the shot is actually taken. The bursts of light cause the pupils of your subjectís eyes to contract, providing a smaller angle through which the reflected light can escape. The result is that the effect of the reflected light is less noticeable in your captured images. To enable Red-Eye Reduction mode, first turn the mode dial to the camera or hand icon, or to [SCN], and then press the flash mode button (lightning bolt icon). Press the Down arrow button to select the button with the eye icon. Press the [OK/FUNC] button to activate the mode. The eye icon will appear on the LCD when Red-Eye Reduction flash mode is active. Note: Some scene modes automatically set the flash mode to a different setting or disable the flash entirely. If this happens, choose a different scene or shoot in Full Auto mode. How can I correct ìred-eyeî in my existing images? The Stylus 740 has a built-in Red-Eye Correction tool. To access it, first turn the mode dial to the Playback icon (green arrow) and then press the [MENU] button. Press the Up arrow on the arrow pad to select [EDIT], and then press the [OK/FUNC] button to access the [EDIT] menu. Use the Up or Down arrow to select [REDEYE FIX], and then press the Right arrow to advance to the next screen. Use the Left and Right arrows to navigate to the image in need of red-eye correction. After selecting the desired image, press [OK/FUNC]. The Red-Eye correction is applied. You will then be returned to Playback mode. Why do the whites (or blacks) in my pictures look so gray? The Stylus 740's exposure system evaluates light reflecting from your subject and selects an aperture and shutter speed combination that will represent your subject in an approximate average tone (not too bright and not too dark). Pros refer to this as ì18% gray.î This works well for almost all your shooting situations except when your subject happens to be darker or lighter than an average tone. The Stylus 740 allows you to override the exposure value in order to intentionally brighten or darken your images. Click here for more information on when and how to manually adjust the cameraís exposure value. Additionally, the Stylus 740 gives you another option for capturing images that contain lots of white space. The ìBeach & Snowî scene mode is calibrated to amplify bright whites in order to make images taken in snowy conditions more vibrant. You may be able to use the Snow scene mode to achieve better results capturing images whose foregrounds or backgrounds are dominated by whites. I set the Alarm Clock feature, but it didnít ring at the scheduled time. Why not? Check to see if the [ALARM CLOCK] settings are set appropriately. When setting alarm clock, the [SNOOZE], [ALARM SOUND], and volume options require that the [OK/FUNC] button be pushed twice. If the button were only pushed once for any of these settings, then the settings would not have been set. Check to see if [DUALTIME] is set to [ON]. If it is, the alarm clock will sound according to the date and time settings of [DUALTIME], not to the camera default data and time. Check to see if the Stylus 740 is in Silent Mode. In this mode, the camera emits no audible cues. To disable Silent Mode, first place the camera into any shooting mode other than [GUIDE], and then press the [MENU] button. Press the Right Arrow and then the Down Arrow to select [Silent Mode]. Press the [OK/FUNC] button to access the Silent mode menu. Use the Up or Down arrow button to choose [OFF], and then press [OK/FUNC] again to disable Silent Mode. To reactivate Silent Mode, repeat the above procedure but at the Silent Mode menu choose [ON] instead of [OFF]. When I print images on my printer or take them to my local photo lab for 4îx6î prints, the top and bottom of my pictures are cut off. Why is this happening? The Stylus 740 shoots in a default aspect ratio of 4:3. A 4îx6î print has an aspect ratio of 3:2. Therefore, an image taken with the Stylus 740 contains more information than can fit in a 4îx6î frame. When the image is enlarged and centered in the 3:2 frame, a little bit of the image is cut off the top and bottom. The camera no longer turns on. What could be wrong? The battery may be dead or underpowered. If the battery is completely drained, the camera will not power on when the Power button is pressed. If the battery is nearly drained, the camera may briefly display a Battery Empty error message and then power off, or it may power on and then quickly power off without displaying the error. In either case, charge the battery using the LI-40C battery charger bundled with the camera. Be sure to properly align the arrow on the bundled battery with the arrow on the bundled battery charger. It is possible to force the battery into the charger so that the arrows are not aligned. This is an improper orientation, and the battery will not be charged. For instructions on how to properly inset the battery into the charger, please see "How do I charge the lithium-ion battery?"
